For National Play Day 2017 at Hepworth Wakefield families collaboratively designed, built and played in their own outdoor play environment: a pop up village of dens built and rebuilt over the day.
We provided a selection of raw materials and fixings and helped participants, using simple techniques and tools, to turn these into play components which in-turn become an exciting, ever evolving, play environment. Starting from a base of reclaimed timber pallets, we built up and out using both soft, textile and foam and rigid, card and wood, materials. Through out the day we encouraged participants, young and old, to do a variety of tasks in response to words and ideas inspired by the Hepworth Gift. These included: internal, external, journey, through, space, over, and under.
Our events have something for everyone, from 0-99 years old, engaging older children in designing and making new components and providing a safe space for younger children to engage in play. Adults are always supported and encouraged to participate.
