Client: Young V&A Collaborators: Families and staff at Ocean Children’s Centre, Sarah Olley
While Bethnal Green’s Young V&A is being refurbished we’ve been working with children and parents at the near by Ocean Children’s Centre to explore how materials, texture and play could influence and inform the design and use of the new spaces.
Based on the textural themes of the new museum’s Play gallery we created a toolkit of play blocks, all the same size but varying between over 30 different materials. Across four session we carefully observed and discussed how both children and parents responded to the materials, sharing ideas and discovering the play potential at different ages and stages of development. We worked with the wonderful Sarah Olley, expert Montessori practitioner, for part of this commission, sharing ideas and experience and playing with the materials ourselves.
